Because engineered stone is now off the table nationwide, the good news is that every remaining benchtop material is a genuinely capable surface, and we help you choose the right one rather than defaulting to a single product. High-pressure laminate is the value option, and today's ranges are a world away from the old days, with stone, timber and concrete looks, tight seams and a hard-wearing finish that suits busy family kitchens across the Thrumster and Sancrox estates. Natural granite and marble bring the real-stone look many customers wanted from engineered products, and we work with licensed stonemasons to template, cut and install them safely and legally; granite is dense and durable, while marble is softer and more characterful but wants a little more care. Why won't you install engineered stone?

Because it is illegal and unsafe. Australia banned the use, supply and manufacture of engineered (reconstituted) stone from 1 July 2024, and banned importing it from 1 January 2025, after cutting it caused a wave of silicosis, an incurable lung disease, among fabricators. What is the best benchtop now that engineered stone is banned?

There is no single best; it depends on how you cook and what you want to spend. Laminate gives the best value and a huge range of looks. Porcelain and sintered surfaces are the toughest and lowest-maintenance, and excellent near the coast. Natural granite is dense and durable, marble is softer and more characterful, both installed by licensed stonemasons. Timber brings warmth and stainless is the hygienic cook's choice. We will talk you through the trade-offs at the measure.

Can I keep my existing engineered stone benchtop?

Yes. The ban stops new engineered stone being manufactured, supplied and installed; it does not require you to remove a benchtop already fitted in your home, and minor work or removal of existing installed product is still allowed. So an engineered stone top you already have is fine to keep and use. When you do eventually replace it, we will fit a compliant material instead.

Do you cut the stone yourselves?

For natural granite and marble we work with licensed stonemasons who template, cut and finish the slab safely and legally, and we coordinate that with the cabinetry and the install so it all comes together as one job. Laminate, timber and stainless tops we fabricate and fit ourselves. Either way you deal with one local point of contact from measure to installation, and the whole job is covered by our $20 million public liability insurance.

How do porcelain and natural stone compare for a coastal kitchen?

Both suit the salt air well. Porcelain and sintered surfaces are extremely hard, heat and scratch resistant, UV stable and need almost no maintenance, which is ideal for beachside and outdoor kitchens around Lighthouse Beach and Bonny Hills. Natural granite is very durable but, like marble, is porous and needs sealing and periodic resealing to keep moisture and stains out. If low maintenance is the priority we usually lean toward porcelain; if you want genuine natural stone we spec the sealing schedule with it.

Do you replace just the benchtop, or the whole kitchen?

Either. If your cabinets are sound we can replace the benchtop alone, which is a common upgrade for established Port Macquarie and Camden Haven kitchens. If the base cabinets are swollen or dated we can rebuild those in HMR board at the same time, or reface them. We will assess your kitchen honestly at the free measure and tell you whether a new top alone gives you the result you want or whether more is worth doing.
